The mouse's sensors, through the database, know that sliding one finger up and down is a gesture for scrolling, to deliver the correct response. Scrolling with an Apple Mouse is that easy. To scroll up or down your Mac, slide one finger up or down on your Apple mouse. The latest Magic Mouse 2 release has an improved design and is built to be more accurate than its predecessor.

It has sensors located across its surface, and an intentional touch will prompt response on your Mac screen. That means that it does have a scroll, only that it isn't a scroll wheel. However, the Apple mouse uses sensors to identify simple gestures like scrolling and swiping. Standard mice have scroll wheels that enable users to scroll up and down on their PCs. Yes, you can scroll with the Apple Mouse. However, if you are used to other mouses, you might be facing problems scrolling with an Apple Mouse. The one currently in use is the Magic Mouse which leverages a robust sensor mechanism and a standard query database to make decisions on scrolling and swiping on your Mac PC.
It's a little more complicated than that as you will see, but that is the general idea.The Apple mouse is a convenient peripheral device that is wireless and rechargeable. To distinguish between trackpad and mouse, Scroll Reverser essentially looks at the gesture events to determine whether there are 2 or more fingers on the trackpad. The main documentation is Quartz Event Services Reference. Scroll Reverser installs an event tap, which gives access to event stream, including scrolling events and gesture events. Everything else is just user interface rigging.

The real guts of the code is in MouseTap.m. Older code targeting 10.4+ is in the 'tiger' branch and 10.7+ is in the 'lion' branch. The master branch targets 10.12 and higher. Install and runĭownload the latest release, unzip, and place Scroll Reverser.app in your /Applications folder. See the web home page for the downloads, or the respective labelled branches for the code.
Older versions are available for older OS versions down to OS X 10.4. The latest build of Scroll Reverser requires macOS 10.12.6 and above, and is a univeral binary for both Intel and Apple Silicon (M1) Macs.
